And Now I Can See Crows Mating in the MistPam Purvis (Voice), Wilber Morris (Acoustic Bass), Denis Charles (Drums), Bob Ackerman (Flute), Herb Robertson (Trumpet)The group here was a joining of musical artists who often got together “at home” to woodshed, work out musical ideas, and play for their own pleasure. Both the late Wilber Morris and Denis Charles had the spirit of giving and music that encouraged such gatherings. In putting together this informal approach in the more formal setting for recording, Bob Ackerman invited his friend Herb Robertson (who was in town) to join “The Quartet.” Herb did and here are the results. Liner notes from Mr. Ackerman and Ms. Purvis relate the background and circumstances of the gatherings.

Suite EmpathyWilber Morris (Double Bass), Ehran Elisha (Drums), Roy Campbell (Trumpet)Ehran Elisha keeps his group together for years but remains elusive “on the scene.” He works big ideas in his music and isn’t afraid to go out all the time, admirably making the whole greater than the sum of its parts. This music, though just a powerful trio, is both driving and orchestral and impressed us so much we did a number of recordings with his groups for CIMP.

ComPOsedLou Grassi, John Tchicai, Paul Smoker, Art Baron, Perry Robinson, Wilber MorrisThe latest from Lou Grassi's PoBand. This time the guest artist is John Tchicai. This concert by the PoBand is unique for a number of reasons (besides the always-fresh improvisations and presence of guest John Tchicai) in that, for the first time it deals with a compositional framework; Art Baron joins the band; and, sadly, this was the late Wilber Morris' last outing with the band that he helped establish in 1995. Thankfully, Wilber's spirit and voice (instrumentally and vocally) is well represented on the date. Eight wondrous cuts.

Open MusicJohn Bickerton, Wilber Morris, Rashid BakrPianist John Bickerton likes to call his music Open Music. We'd call it lyrical, impressionistic and moving; something of a hybrid with runners to both Keith Jarrett and Cecil Taylor. Here at a concert grand, Mr. Bickerton is joined by Rashid Bakr and Wilber Morris on nine original and connective compositions.

Stalker SongsThomas Borgmann, Peter Brotzmann, Wilber Morris, Denis CharlesThe Thomas Borgmann Trio meeting the legendary Peter Brötzmann is a joining of muscle and mind on what amounts to an all-star quartet. Through the WoodsFrode Gjerstad, Bobby Bradford, Wilber Morris, Newman BakerFrode Gjerstad is a dynamic Norwegian saxman obviously unafraid of the unknown; actually, he embraces it. On this strong quartet date, he matches his aptitudes with Wilber Morris, Newman Baker, and the (legendary?) avant garde trumpeter, Bobby Bradford. They've never sounded better, this is music of emotional and cerebral power. Recorded Sept. 15 & 16, 1997.
